To the Philippine Embassy in Brazil: I sent this email to the Philippine Honorary Consulate General in Sao Paulo, Brazil through this email: [email protected] but it bounced back: I am Dennis D. Gupa, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Theatre and Film at the University of Winnipeg, Manitoba. I am a theatre director, applied theatre practitioner, and Performance Studies scholar. My teaching and research focus on interdisciplinary minoritarian and diasporic theatre in North America—particularly in Canada—as well as Indigenous ecological knowledges and climate crisis studies, which I approach through ritual performance, folklore, and applied theatre. I will be attending a conference in Fortaleza and meeting theatre artists in São Paulo next month. I will be in São Paulo from December 8–10, and on December 9 I will be visiting SP Escola de Teatro. I am also hoping to connect with Filipino communities in São Paulo. If there is a Filipino community organization that the consulate knows about, I would be happy to offer a free theatre workshop focused on community building to this organization or organizations. Before coming to Canada as a theatre artist and graduate student, I taught theatre at the University of the Philippines Los Baños for ten years. I completed my theatre degrees at UP Diliman and was involved in numerous community-based theatre projects while I was a student. My current research focuses on community building among diasporic Filipino Canadian communities. I would be glad to share my knowledge and experience with Filipinos in Brazil as well. Would you be able to connect me with the Filipino organizations willing to meet me and perhaps have a theatre workshops?
